History of Ellerstadt
Ellerstadt lies between the river Rhine and the mountain-range of the Haardt. The history of Ellerstadt reaches deep into the past. Ellerstadt was first mentioned in 783 a. C. Excavations of a Roman settlement near Wachenheim and tombs in Ellerstadt show, that people lived here long before that date. In the Middle Ages Ellerstadt often changed his owners. In the years 1793/94 Ellerstadt was plundered by French revolution troops.
Since 1969 Ellerstadt belongs to the territory of Bad Dürkheim, and since 1972 to the district of Wachenheim. Today Ellerstadt has about 2.200 inhabitants. Viticulture takes an important part in Ellerstadt. High-class white and red grapes are cultivated on about 290 ha. You can test the quality in several wineries and our local restaurants. Many paved hiking trails invite you to go for a walk through the vineyards or our protected recreational area.
